Night's Fingerprint
Startrails, plane trails, boat trails, car trails. train trails – yep this one has the lot lol. Stanwell Tops last night from 10pm – 11pm looking south to Wollongong just south of Royal National Park. Worth clicking on large – really get to see the startrails even with the annoying watermark.
This is a blend of 117 X 30 second exposures using the superb Schurs Startrails action
Your looking at about an hour’s worth of night sky here.
Pretty trippy huh! More startrails on the left courtesy of the Milky Way. And a bit of serendipity which I find happens a lot with night shots is that it is by pure chance that I happened to be pointing straight to the south polar star so got nice concentric circles.
Now what is particularly strange about this shot is that main plane trail right through the centre of the shot (pretty annoying but no way to get rid of it). The weird bit is that “ricochet” at the left hand edge of the frame like a comet contrail – any ideas?? It looks like the light hits the edge of the frame and then bounces off but it’s a plane trail – there is no way a plane would veer that sharply. Very odd.

amazing collation of 117 shots mate !
you really own this style, wonderful work !

Absolutely stunning !!! Ummm that is interesting, that lil burst of light on the left …. No idea ? You could always photo shop plane trail out ??? You could do it !
What time of day into night did you take this ? Love that the setting sun and the shore line. Or did you blend a sunset shot and a night shot ?? Amazing stuff either way.

Oops ! I see. You took 117 frames of 30 seconds. Great idea and work.
Geoff Coleman... replied
Thanks for your extended comment Sarah.
H M Bascom
This is a very unique startrails shot. Could that sharp bounce be attributed to some lens distortion? I dunno, that is odd. Marvelous work.
Geoff Coleman... replied
Thanks for stopping by Helen – much appreciated.

Geoff Coleman... replied
Love to inspire so thanks so much Lorraine.

Neil Boucher
WOW! Awsome image Geoff!
Could it be another plane and the two trails coincidentally met at the edge of the frame?
Geoff Coleman... replied
Yeah I think that’s the consensus – thanks Neil
Diane Schuster
The large view is phenomenal! Is that a waterway off to the far right? That ricochet could be a falling star?? Well anyway, this is fantastic!
Geoff Coleman... replied
Thanks so much – the whole bottom section of the photo is ocean.
Cheryl Lunde
This is the most amazing shot I have ever seen!!! FABULOUS! A fave!
Geoff Coleman... replied
Wow – what a beautiful comment – thanks so much Cheryl.
Mel Brackstone
Amazing result, Geoff! Love it! I suspect the short trail on the left could be the part of a plane that started at that point and disappeared off the screen very soon after you began shooting….
Geoff Coleman... replied
Thanks Mel – sounds about right to me.

Great capture.

Glad you were boggled my friend – thanks.
Di Jenkins
My theory on the “ricochet light ” ... blinking navigation lights on the wings. The “ricochet” has a slightly green tinge to me indicating a starboard nav light. Just a theory though … GREAT SHOT!
Geoff Coleman... replied
Thanks so much Di.

that was one long night. Nice merge! :) !!

!!
..looks like you’ve captureed a vortex or energy hole into the next universe!...I love the
light you’ve captured..and perhaps you have captured a reflection like a how a rainbow works
..light bouncing from the otherside?
..eitherway..no matter what -what you”ve got is really AWESOME…GOOD ON YOU!!
-jinney
jinney
FYI-I meant the light bouncing from the end of the runnway behind the plane!
..this is really amazing!!!
-again… jinney
Geoff Coleman... replied
Wow – some pretty trippy suggestions there Jinney to match the shot lol. Thanks so much.
JeffStockton
Fantastic work all round Geoff.Your Perseverence to make the entire 117 captures happen from start to finish has paid off as i know it wont work with a very long exposure on digital. Awesome piece of work mate
Geoff Coleman... replied
Yeah single long exposures are a bugger for noise so this does work a lot better. Thanks mate.
Jim Robertson
Great work Geoff

Hi Geoff, another amazing shot, love how you’ve got the pole star centred. You are the king of night time photography, my mind boggles with the 117 shot thing. Is the bounced trail another plane coming into frame.
(got my 5DII today, I’m so excited and thanks for all your tech advice, you’re a legend Geoff)
Geoff Coleman... replied
Oh wow smart and lucky you waiting for the 5D – given that it at least matches and in some features exceeds the 1Ds I’ve been thinking about whether I should sell mine and get it, particularly for the reduction in weight. But then yesterday I was out on a very windy shoot and the extra weight actually came in handy so think I’ll hang onto it awhile but would love to hear what you think of the 5D.
Thanks for your lovely comment too my friend.

Alice Oates
Absolutely stunningly awesome.
Geoff Coleman... replied
Thanks so much Alice.

Easy to forget how we spin until you see one of these! I’d say the plane banked a bit suddenly then corrected, and you see the wing lights non-superimposed briefly, then merge slowly back, looks like 2 or 3 others way behind as well. Outstanding effects!
Geoff Coleman... replied
Yes it is – one of the main reasons I like doing these kind of shots – this happens all the time but we almost never notice it. Thanks for your lovely comment.
Heather Rivet...

Great patience is required to make such an image. Fantastic result
Geoff Coleman... replied
I gotta admit the post-processing is a bit of a bugger (117 X 60mb pics gives the old Mac serious indigestion) but I like the result. Thanks Mike.

Marguerite Foxon
My guess is the little jerk of light at the end of the plane’s light trail is a second plane just emerging in on a trajectory that runs across the perspective of the main plane. It would be heading SE I assume. Anyhow, marvellous shot Geoff, and it really shows the wonders of the heavens even with your name plastered across the larger view!! You continue to amaze ….
Geoff Coleman... replied
Glad we can still amaze you Marguerite – thanks my friend.
Paul Manning

Duncan Waldron
Hell’s donkeys, Geoff – how long does it take you to process 117 pics? Great stuff (again).
I’d have to take issue with your “all you need is a DSLR” comment though: all you really need for star trails is a simple camera with B shutter setting and a roll of film. No need for 30 sec exposures which then have to be combined into one image – just leave the shutter open for the duration. Getting it processed’s the trick these days though! Also, from what I’ve seen of many digital star trail shots, the reds tend to be lost (red stars & nebulae), which detracts slightly.
As for the ‘ricochet’, I first thought it was most likely a reflection off the edge of the inner edge of the frame, but the angle is probably wrong. Given the greenish colour, and the pattern of brightening and fading, I suspect it’s possibly a meteor. If you can take the one frame that it appears on, enlarge that section and post it here, it might be eaiser to tell.
Geoff Coleman... replied
Not as long as you’d think given they are each 60mb – took the old Mac about half an hour but it wouldn’t let me do much else at the same time lol.
Yes sorry about the film oversight but when you are talking to these young things if it isn’t digital it isn’t relevant lol.
I think the consensus is that the light is just another short intersecting plane trail but I will go take a look see which frame it’s on.
Thanks for your lovely and extended comment Duncan.
Normf
Congratulations on your well earned feature in New South Wales Photography! Interesting discussion as well.
Geoff Coleman... replied
Thanks Norm – glad you found it interesting.
Duncan Waldron
Maybe one day I’ll experience the wonders of digital trickery at that level :)
if it isn’t digital it isn’t relevant – we can’t let them off that lightly ;-)
“Lovely and extended” ... I don’t often share company with those words, har har.
Have fun in 09 with this wondrous kit, Geoff!
Geoff Coleman... replied
Hehe – well enjoy the compliment as far as you, er, want to extend it :-)
You have a great 09 as well.

Stuart Chapman
Having just stood in a field freezing my fingers off for about an hour shooting 117 (how ironic is that) images myself, I can appreciate everything that went into this shot. I have a very very long way to go to even get close to magic like this though. All the elements work well together and have been captured and then reproduced so perfectly, no more so than the illuminated clouds hanging over the city and the plane trail just tops it all off.
Geoff Coleman... replied
Thanks again for your lovely commentary Stuart – ever so much appreciated. Yes I think startrails shoots are best left to summer lol.
Matt Penfold
Geoff, I don’t think that’s a plane trail at all, it’s actually a satellite, possibly GPS. I think that the bit on the left is the same satellite on its previous orbit, just captured when you took the first image. (see if it’s only on the first one). That’s my guess anyway. Great image.
Geoff Coleman... replied
Interesting thought Matt – thanks for taking the trouble to write it down – much appreciated.
Trenton Purdy
AMAZING! I love this.
Geoff Coleman... replied
Thanks Trenton – glad you like it.
Matt Penfold
Geoff, I’m wrong about the bit on the left being the same satellite, the quickest ones I can find in orbit are about 90 mins :) also not GPS, they orbit about twice a day. I found this image of a satellite trail on a time lapse.
Geoff Coleman... replied
Thanks Matt but the link didn’t work – wouldn’t let me access the server.

love that one jeoff , the plane makes the image even more interesting even though they get in the way most of the time

just had another look at that anomoly on the left , looks very much like an iridium flare
just a thought

What on earth is an iridium flare – sounds fascinating? Thanks for your lovely comment too.

Mariann Rea
Cool technique! I will try it out :P
Brandie1
Great work,
Looks like a vortexs from space.
jeffrae
viewed large is fantastic and what I noticed is the different star trails have different colors…who’d have thought the camera would have picked up that too! Wow!
Geoff Coleman... replied
Yes I find that interesting too – long exposure really picks this up. Thanks for your lovely comment.
David Haworth
Interesting method within PS..I use a standalone called Startrails.exe which is fairly fast to process. I guess you have to shoot later to avoid the plane.Big glow from Woolongong
Geoff Coleman... replied
Thanks David – I must try that one, although I’m pretty happy with the PS Action – jsut takes a while because each file is 20mb. Yes planes are a real pain sometimes but at others they add something to the pic – always hard to tell which way it wil go.
Shelly Hiebert
This is absolutely fantastic Geoff….I am pretty much speechless. I adore your title by the way :)

Geoff Coleman... replied
It’s very relaxing doing these long exposures. Thanks for your lovely comment.
EOS20
Great shot!
You can get rid of the plane, but you will have to sort thought all your images and find the shots with the plane flying though and remove them before your stack. However, you might end up with gaps between the star trails (It will depend how many frames you remove) but you might not even notice the gaps at normal the normal viewing size.
Geoff Coleman... replied
Thanks – tried exactly this but the number and extent of the gaps was more annoying than the plane trail which I quite like as it throws in a dissonant element to the symmetry.
Derek Dobbie
This is awesome. I might try this myslef now that I have a time delay function on my new Nikon. Well done.
