Dawn's Flight

I’d like to be able to say that when I was composing this shot I saw the plane taking off out of frame and worked out its trajectory would take it just over th e sun as it was rising, but I can’t :-(. Truth is I was so focussed on the rising sun I didn’t even notice the plane til I downloaded the shot and started working on it. So this is actually a tiny crop of the original landscape orientation I shot it in. One of those serendipitous moments you don’t even notice at the time.

Taken from Bundeena Cliffs, Royal National Park just a few moments after Streaming to the Dawn.

Another stumble upon going through the archives.

I would have bought that you framed this knowing the plane was there!
It is one bloody brilliant shot though! great work Geoff!

Thanks Michael – it was a bit of luck to be sure.

    C’mon Geoff!
You can do better than that mate! At least try to get the jet immediately above the sun wont you?
    lol
    Very, very nice.

  • Geoff Coleman... replied

hehe – I was toying with postin the next shot where the sun and plane were at extreme diagonals in the image so given your comment probably just as well I didn’t!

Geoff, I am often amazed at what shows up in my photos, usually it is something that needs to be cropped out, but in this case it is really cool that the plane just happened to be in the frame. But the focus here is the sunrise and you captured it in all its glory. – Cora

  • Geoff Coleman... replied

Thanks for the feedback Cora – yeah it is interesting what sneaks into shots that you miss a the time.

Wonderful shot Geoff – I’ve had a number of sunrises at Bundeena and never quite worked out a good spot for sunrise byt you clearly have! They are both gorgeous

  • Geoff Coleman... replied

Thanks Geraldine – I think the tricky thing with sunrises is that the dawn itself is often so interesting that you end up just focussing on that and then it could have been taken anywhere.

Thanks Simone – very much appreciate it.

I’m disappointed Geoff – I thought you had at least arranged with the pilot to change the flight path to fit nicely in the frame and stop mid-air for a few seconds to allow for long exposure… Oh well the fact that this was in fact totally accidental doesn’t make it any less stunning though :))

  • Geoff Coleman... replied

hehe – thanks Douzy – my telepathic skills aren’t at their best at dawn.

The strength of the reds and oranges alone make this a very impressive shot (currently the aeroplane is out of view as I tap away in the comment box) but the plane just adds that extra dimension.

It brings scale to the shot and shows just how vast and expansive it all is as the ordinarily huge jet is but a small but significant part to the shot.

What I really like is the positioning of the cloud across the sun and the smallest of reflections on the horizon as it hasily shifts into position into the sky.

Where I live is situated under the flight path of England and Europe and we are never without a plane somewhere in the sky. I’ve had shots with jetsreams that I wasn’t on planning on that have improved the shot before too. (Has more to do with the fact that i’m looking at the rocks to make sure I have a decent foot hold more than planes in the sky!)

  • Geoff Coleman... replied

Thanks so much for your considered comment Stuart – always such a buzz having you to visit.

  • Travis Easton

Come on Geoff come clean you had it on motor drive didn’t you… Truly a special touch, great shot but the plane element really makes it soar, you must have been over the moon (sun) when you noticed it upon uploading.

  • Geoff Coleman... replied

Yeah I was pretty excited Travis – funny just how often serendipitous things happen in photography I find. Thanks mate.

The whole color scheme is truly wonderful, plane or not – Cezanne would have been proud of the orange/reddish palette! – as for the plane, yes, many comments have exemplified the feel of evocative memories, and scale…and it is a touch. Nice work bud!

  • Geoff Coleman... replied

hehe – Cezanne – I like that. Thanks for your lovely comment Julian.

I think we have a lot of serendipitous moments we are still yet to remember or discover…which is why life is such an awesome adventure…what will happen next!!!

This image is so down right extrordinary…that I almost feel like I should see the heat waves at the placement of the sun Geoff. The plane is an awesome moment you captured…but that sunset has me mesmorized. If the sky were to ever catch on fire…I would have o say it would look exactly like this!!
