Moonlight Sonata

Geoff Coleman - Landscapes

Moonlight Sonata

This shot was taken under a full moon at the top of Watamolla Gorge in Royal National Park, just south of Sydney Australia. You can see the cascade in the bottom left corner and the glow in the sky is from a neighbouring town. The sandstone in this gorge is amazing and varies from orange to bright red depending on whether its lit by the moon or sunlight. From here the water cascades in a series of waterfalls to a beautiful pool at the bottom. Unfortunately the falls face south and the moon is always in the north so I can’t get them lit by moonlight. They are the same falls as in Sunset Cascade taken from virtually the same position but facing south instead of north. This is one of my all time favourite places – night or day it’s magic.

You truly are the master of the moon Geoff. I have spent many an hour recently in the dark fumbling around and fail to get anything anywhere near respectible to post let alone a masterpiece such as this.

I always loved your night shots, but after trying them and seeing just how difficult they are to pull off i’m never more in awe of them. Before they just looked great, now the look great and I have some level of appreciation in the skill required to capture it.

I can’t believe (or work out) how you get such beautiful stars so bright and still. Set against a small town kicking out light it is truly magical and the moonlit foreground is crisp and haunting. The movement of water just tops it all off to perfection.

  • Geoff Coleman... replied

Man you write the most comprehensive and thoughtful comments on RB Stuart – I SO look forward to them. Thank you so much for taking the time to really look at and reflect on my work – it means more to me than I can say. Yeah night shots are pretty challenging but that’s the fun of it I reckon!

  • Michael Walters

    Michael Walters

arr sorry Geoff, that was meant to be ‘jaw dropping’ shot!!! jam….thats just odd :)

  • Geoff Coleman... replied

I thought it was wonderful – never had someone dropping jam on account of one of my shots before – was thinking I might need to warn people from now on that viewing my images may be a jam retaining hazard.

  • Michael Walters

    Michael Walters

hahah, arrh nice one! well you may keep the jam then!
