The Raging Stillness - Startrails Version

Geoff Coleman - Landscapes

The Raging Stillness - Startrails Version

Definitely worth clicking on the photo to see it large.

Part of the Raging Stillness series this is a blend of 10 X 30 second exposures taken as part of a series of 110 sequential images during a particularly lovely night storm we had a little while ago. You’re looking at 5minutes of the storm at its height. The lines above the storm are startrails and the reflection in the water is from the full moon (out of shot).
Taken off Bundeena Cliffs, Royal National Park, just south of Sydney Australia.
This is a tiny section from the original photograph – being able to blow up such a small part of the image to A3 is where the 1Ds and the L series Canon lenses come into their own.
Canon 1Ds MkIII – 16-35mm f/2.8 LII USM lens
Tv: 30secs
Av: f/3.2
ISO: 200
FL: 27mm

Oh wow how cool – Rob Mullner nominated Raging Stillness for the briliant Pay it Forward Group with this comment:

“Having tried my darndest to get lightning shots with mixed results and success, I know how hard it is to nail it perfectly…This shot really highlights the awesome power of storms, technically perfect and a difficult element of nature to photograph – so hats off to your Geoff for this and these series of shots, and your work in general….Rob.

Thanks heaps Rob.

Taken on the same night as these two (just click on the pics):

This second pic has a link to an animated time lapse version of the whole storm – 91 photos linked into a sequence so you get to see the whole storm in 23 seconds.

Hi Geoff, these pics are awesome. I want to learn to take photos like this – what do I do?

  • Geoff Coleman... replied

Thanks Colin – get out into the night and start experimenting – don’t mean to be glib but that’s what I did. The more pics you take using different variables of ISO aperture and shutter speed the quicker you will learn what works – these pics are the end result of more hours than I could count out in the dark and literally thousands of discarded images. Good luck.

  • Keegan Wong

    Keegan Wong

What a stunning composition. I have a few questions to throw at you Geoff, if that’s possible:

    1) What program do you use to blend the shots together?
    2) Are 30 seconds exposure enough to get the swirling stars you see in your shot? or was there some post-processing brightening done?

Thanks mate, such a stunning shot once again.

  • Geoff Coleman - Landscapes

    Geoff Coleman...

Thanks Keegan – there is a link to the Startrails Photoshop action I use on this pic:

And yes 30 secs is enough to get startrails except for the widest focal lengths ie the higher the FL the longer the startrail per 30 second interval. Hope that helps.

Wow, I am truly, truly amazed, The technique you used is mind blowing to me, I haven’t even thought of doing that. An what’s I didn’t know is that the stars have a curve. Geoff, like Rob says, you so nailed this. I missed these massive shots cause you weren’t on my watchlist… an oversight which I’ve now rectified.

What’s so cool with your idea to do separate takes is that you can see the progression of the storm rather than having it all happen in one place. Skillful exposure calculation with stunning result. I am so in awe that you pulled this off so brilliantly.

  • Geoff Coleman... replied

Well thank you – getting a wrap like that from someone as skilled as you has made my day. Ditto the Watchlist.

    whatever,this is a true stunner,
    well done

  • Geoff Coleman... replied

Thank for your lovely comment Gideon. Yep, you’re right – this is a 20% crop of the original shot so the startrails are on “high zoom” – hence their length.
