The Raging Stillness

The Raging Stillness

Worth going to Larger for this one – heaps more stars.

Storm off Bundeena Cliffs, Royal National Park.

This shot has all my favourite elements in one image – the moon, stars, lightning, storm clouds, and ocean. What a treat this night was – getting some fantastic storms here. This is about the sixth I’ve photographed. There are two lightning cells here – the white one under the moon and the orange one off to the right of the main cloudbank.

This is one shot in a continuous sequence of 100 I shot to create a startrails version. Unfortunately my computer is choking on processing that many 50mb files at once so may be delayed in posting the startrails version. Shot with the Big Scary Monster:

Canon 1Ds MkIII – 16-35mm f/2.8 LII USM lens
Tv: 30secs
Av: f/3.5
ISO: 200
FL: 17mm

  • Geoff Coleman... replied

Glad you like it Michael – yeah I’ve gone a bit overboard but just got sick of being presented with vistas like this and then having the shot spoiled by the limitations of the lens or cropped sensor.

Love the image. I am still trying to get one little old shot of lightning, and you come up with this!

  • Geoff Coleman... replied

Thank you. It helps if you can find somewhere very open so that you follow the storm over an extended period. I was able to track this one for over 2 hours and if you’re doing 30 second exposures you are bound to come away with something.

i am in awwww of this photo… its devine, its great.. its the best thing i have seen on red bubble so far.. how on earth do you get stars? hehehe i have a canon 400d… i want to know your tricks hahaha

  • Geoff Coleman... replied

Thanks for your particularly lovely comment mel – I really appreciate it. No tricks – capturing stars is dead easy. You need to be away from a city and have a camera that can do a 30 sec exposure at f/4 at least. That’s it – now getting rid of the noise – that is something else again!

  • melcphotography
