The Raging Stillness
Worth going to Larger for this one – heaps more stars.
Storm off Bundeena Cliffs, Royal National Park.
This shot has all my favourite elements in one image – the moon, stars, lightning, storm clouds, and ocean. What a treat this night was – getting some fantastic storms here. This is about the sixth I’ve photographed. There are two lightning cells here – the white one under the moon and the orange one off to the right of the main cloudbank.
This is one shot in a continuous sequence of 100 I shot to create a startrails version. Unfortunately my computer is choking on processing that many 50mb files at once so may be delayed in posting the startrails version. Shot with the Big Scary Monster:
Canon 1Ds MkIII – 16-35mm f/2.8 LII USM lens
Tv: 30secs
Av: f/3.5
ISO: 200
FL: 17mm

The Raging Stillness belongs to the following groups:

Geoff Coleman in reply to Robert Mullner’s comment, 2 months ago
Thanks Robert – always value your feedback. And yes it is a beast I can tell you but at least with landscapes you can put it on a tripod lol!
Geoff Coleman in reply to Rhana Griffin’s comment, 2 months ago
Rhana you are brilliant!!! I couldn’t have asked for a more wonderful response – thank you for making my day and giving me a great laugh as well!
When I got to Gassss! I thought OMG I’ve made her fart – not quite the response I intended – and then I saw the P.

Love the image. I am still trying to get one little old shot of lightning, and you come up with this!
Geoff Coleman in reply to Michael Bermingham IPA’s comment, 2 months ago
Glad you like it Michael – yeah I’ve gone a bit overboard but just got sick of being presented with vistas like this and then having the shot spoiled by the limitations of the lens or cropped sensor.
Geoff Coleman in reply to Paul Henderson Smith’s comment, 2 months ago
Thanks for the fantastic feedback Paul – glad you like it. It’s not so hard to get a shot like this where I live – it is just such a spectacular area you just have to set up somewhere and be patient.
Geoff Coleman in reply to 4sure’s comment, 2 months ago
What a brilliant comment (well the first bit). Thank you.
Geoff Coleman in reply to Rpnzle’s comment, 2 months ago
Thank you very much – no editing here – what you see is what I was seeing.
Geoff Coleman in reply to palegirl’s comment, 2 months ago
Thank you very much. I am extremely fortunate to live where I do. This vista is just 15 minutes walk from home.
Geoff Coleman in reply to Sarah Moore’s comment, 2 months ago
Thanks Sarah – it’s easy living where I do – landscape photographer’s nirvana down here.

OMG! What a shot! I’ll be wanting to get a shot like this for whats left of my life!
Geoff Coleman in reply to elisab’s comment, 2 months ago
Thank you. It helps if you can find somewhere very open so that you follow the storm over an extended period. I was able to track this one for over 2 hours and if you’re doing 30 second exposures you are bound to come away with something.
