It was very dark down in the Chapel, with the only light being from the candles that you can see and that which was spilling in from the stairway that leads down!

I took this shot of the interior of the Chapel during the open gardens day at St.Nicholas-at-Wade.
The Chapel dates from around the middle of the 13th century, which is earlier than any of the present St.Nicholas Court. The Chapel was built from French stone and chalk blocks in a hole in the ground, which was then covered over on completion.
There is no mention of the Chapel in any of the early records of Thanet, and we can only speculate as to it’s original purpose. Possibly it was built for storage purposes rather than religious, but there is a strong probability that it was used in later centuries by those who were persecuted for their beliefs. Followers of Wycliffe, the Lollards, during the 14th century and both Catholics and Protestants, during the Reformation, may have used the Chapel. By 1792, it was being used as a beer cellar.
There has been a house on the present site of St.Nicholas Court for at least 700 years! The present house dates from the mid 16th century, with a Georgian extension to the west side.

I started my working life in a press agency called Central Press Photos. After learning my trade in Fleet Street, I moved into more commercial and architectual work. I have also spent many a saturday chasing from one wedding to another. These days I photograph anything that takes my eye.
