It’s easy to think $8,000 is too much to ask for in return for this camera. I do not. It wasn’t all that long ago, 11 years to be precise, that Canon released its first “all-Canon” professional DSLR – the Canon EOS 1D. It cost a house to buy one of these babies. It also had only 4 megapixels! Then a short 2 years later, the Canon EOS 1Ds was released – Full-frame and 11 megapixels. It cost a house, an arm, and a leg. And I remember the semi-pro Canon EOS 10D, released in 2003, had a price tag of $5,000 in Australia – body only. All that for 6 megapixels. Damn fine cameras all of them.
We are fortunate to be the market for technology that has been advancing faster than time itself, or so it seems, with dramatic price DECREASES with every iteration of advancement – faster, bigger, better, easier.
Currently, you can buy a fully-specced entry level DSLR for under $500 AND you have several to choose from. Even just a few years ago that pricing and that technology was almost inconceivable.
So, yeh, $8000 sounds a lot, but boy oh boy that’s a damn fine price for the Top of the Line DSLR. It’s less than half the release price of the Nikon D3X for starters.
