This is the beautiful Magda, resident wedge-tailed eagle at Healesville Sanctuary. Magda awes the visitors with her majestic flyovers during the birds of prey show. On this particular day the keeper pointed out two small dots in the sky. These dots became progressively larger and we soon discovered they were a wild wedge-tail eagle pair coming to scope out Magda’s territory. It was indeed an amazing spectacle as the wild eagles pinned their wings to their sides and dived down through the air. Magda became increasingly agitated and flew to high branches around the arena and called out warnings to the intruders. Eventually the wild eagles alighted in the trees around the amphitheatre and it was decided that Magda should be retired to her quarters for her own safety. They were quite literally breathtaking moments as the wild eagles descended, I feel blessed to have witnessed this event.

What a magic moment to have witnessed. And you took a great photo as well. You must have a long telephoto to have reached that far. Impossible, but it looks alarmed :-) And thank you for the detailed description; a well told story is such good fun.

  • Hey Rhoufi, not a long telephoto just a 70-300mm on a dx format camera in this case. They come incredibly close to the crowds. They are such a beautiful bird – it is sad to think that for a long time farmers netted and poisoned these magnificent creatures.

Hi Gwynne, it’s amazing how people, in their quest to conquer nature did not understand the role of these birds and their sheer beauty. I have to share this photo with you. While you’re there cruise through her gallery – it’s an absolute celebration of the raptor.
