A cistern in Istanbul, apparently cobbled together from spare parts. This used to be the city’s water supply, it would fill to the ceiling with water delivered via the aqueducts.

there’s a very “echo-ey” feel in there.. because of the acoustics it’s sometimes used as a concert venue for singers

Great shot – I couldn’t for the life of me get a photo I was happy with in there. Mind you that was pre-digital so didn’t want to waste too many shots trying.
It’s a pretty cool atmosphere in there though, hey?

Great shot, Grant. The fiery colours are awesome and the water on the floor makes for some cool relections :)

Grant, this is a cistern built by the emperor Justinian.

Turkey is predominantly Moslem, and Moslems will use only running water. Therefore, the cisterns were rarely used by them. Istanbul is full of cisterns under the city; this is only one of them and is a favorite tourist stop.
