The 501 in Winter

The 501 in Winter

This painting’s based on 2 photos I took at the North Conway, NH rail museum. The Maine Central RR 501 Consolidated “2-8-0” engine was being rebuilt and was all in primer red paint. The snowplow nearby was in poor condition. The scene and location are completely fabricated, and I took some artistic license with the turntable/roundhouse (please forgive me, rail buffs!). I wanted to capture the ambient light that might occur late in the day with a sunset and reflections on snow.

Original oil on canvas; 36 X 24 inches.

The 501 in Winter belongs to the following groups:

This is beautiful! The use of colour is spectacular, and I love the way the roundhouse is lit up! Nice!

Thanks, Tom. Lighting the interior of the roundhouse was not initially the plan, but then I realized these things were running round the clock.
