Jenul's Elephant by Gary Shaw

This painting was started in a Jain temple in the Old Dehli Market in late January 2009. After Johann, Nadine and I showed interest in the work of Jenul, a master painter involved in painting the ceiling of the temple invited us to spend time learning how to paint Indian elephants in the miniature style. Jenul drew the outline and demonstrated the colour and painting technique. In all, the painting took more than eight hours divided by time in the temple, at Jenul’s home and finally in Melbourne after I was able to use the fine handmade sqirrel hair brushes important for this kind of painting (Courtesy of Nardine who was able to source them in India). Special thanks to Jenul whose patience and kindness was greatly appreciated.
