Sydney Taxi Driver by

During my short stay in Sydney yesterday, I met up with a mate at a Newtown pub for a beer. I hadn’t seen him in 20 years (and it was his shout). But I had a train to catch at Central station and didn’t wanna risk being late by using a bus. So my mate hailed a cab in King St Newtown for me, and before I got in, he said, “check out the driver.” Hehe. Anyway, the driver was very nice and took me all the way to Central, right outside the Country Link platforms. For a minute there I thought he was gonna drive right up to the damn train! He was Shi’a Indian (I’m pretty sure it was Shi’a and not Sunni… apologies if I got it wrong), and a very charming man. We chatted quite a lot on the way to Central… well, I did. But he got a few nods in. Anyway, I told him I’d been photographing various things around Sydney and was disappointed about the wet weather, so he invited me to take his pic when we arrived at Central. And here it is! Fuji Finepix S7000.

After I’d taken a few external shots of the station, I walked inside and there he was again! I figure he’d gone inside to use the loo. So we exchanged a few words, and smiles, and went our separate ways.

I’ve heard a few uncomplimentary comments about migrant taxi drivers in Sydney, but this bloke knew the city like the back of his hand. It was a most pleasant encounter and I’m glad I got the pic. I think I won his heart when I told him his new cab was most impressive. “Thank you!” he beamed.

About Gary Kelly

I’m a hobby photographer. In fact, I’m not sure Red Bubble should refer to me as an “artist”. But I do like to take photos that are above average, and certainly appreciate learning from my fellow Bubbleonian’s efforts as well as their comments. I use a second hand Sony Cybershot F717 and a Fuji Finepix S7000… oldies but goodies. Photography allows me to keep souveniers of my experiences. Today’s deeds become tomorrow’s memories.

Great story, great shot from a truly multicultural city!

  • Thanks, Margaret…. while I was waiting at Circular Quay station I watched a train entering the station driven by… yep, a turban-clad guy with a long beard. Hehe. It was definitely a spot-the-Aussie day but interesting and enjoyable nonetheless.

Thats a great portrait Gary. Glad you had a good experience in a Sydney cab.

  • Thanks, Terry. Yep, he was a great guy and most helpful… as well as a total contrast to a bloke like China in the hat pic.

A FANTASTIC portrait and (as usual) a thoroughly enjoyable story to accompany it. You make me smile, Gary (and I’m still smiling at the photo of Santa on your lap that you posted for Trish… tee hee hee!!!)

  • Thanks, Mieke. I was in a bit of a rush actually with the unexpected invitation to take his pic, and I didn’t have the camera ready. I fumbled around and only took one pic and hoped that it was okay. Voila! Yes, Santa and me… a bit of a classic going back 40 years. I must have a thing about beards hehe. Which all goes to prove that photos are indeed precious. How many times have you seen victims of house fires interviewed, and hear them put photos on the top of their lost list?

You’re absolutely right. Which reminds me – I need to do a full back-up of my photos before I go away for Christmas… :)

Wonderful story and capture Gary. I’m so glad that you took his photo. It’s good to see you experimenting with different types of photography – candids and portraiture are a cornerstone of photography and you’ve excelled with this!

  • Experimenting with different types of photography? Hehe. I guess you could call me an opportunist. I just shoot what I see, no matter what it is. Thanks for the wrap, William. It’s all good fun and I enjoy it, even though I’m not as serious as people like yourself. I think I’m too lazy to be serious about anything.

Nice one G. I love how he has had to adjust his earphones to suit the length of his beard.

  • Thanks, David. He was very neatly dressed and well presented as well a most pleasant chap.
