Kookaburra at Old Bar Beach by

Lovely day today so I decided to take a trip out to Old Bar Beach (Mid North Coast, NSW Oz) to take pics of kite surfers. I arrived to see none. Not bloody one! Zilch! Just some barefoot kid with a suction thing trying to catch worms at the mouth of the Manning River. Then I heard something behind me. A kookaburra had landed in a tree just a few feet away. “Hey, you! Stay there! Don’t move ya mongrel!” I ordered and rushed back to my car to get the camera. When I got back I was surprised to see him still there. So I got busy taking as many pics as I could. Every time I’ve seen close-up pics of kookas on Red Bubble I’ve thought “why can’t that happen to ME?!” Well, today it did. And not before time! I ain’t gettin’ any younger ya know.

Sony Cybershot F717

I’m a hobby photographer. In fact, I’m not sure Red Bubble should refer to me as an “artist”. But I do like to take photos that are above average, and certainly appreciate learning from my fellow Bubbleonian’s efforts as well as their comments. I use a second hand Sony Cybershot F717 (recently replaced by a new Nikon D3100) and a Fuji Finepix S7000. Photography allows me to keep souvenirs of my experiences. Today’s deeds become tomorrow’s memories.

He’s so handsome :) Much better-looking than a kite-surfer if you ask me!

  • Well, with kite surfers, it’s the kite more than the surfer (with some possible exceptions). Anyway, I got lucky with this shot… the right light on the feathers, and just the 3 elements… bird, branch and blue sky. And a twinkle in the eye.

Fantastic shot Gary, must have been the tone of your voice that made him stay there. Nice and sharp mate.

  • Thanks, Terry. Yes, it’s all in the tone of voice and how you say mongrel. I’m quite pleased with that shot… actually, I’m even more pleased with the opportunity. It came right outta the blue!

Hi Gary, Justin sent me and as you know one does not ignore his requests!! lol
This Kookaburra looks like our Kingfisher….and they are very difficult to photograph. Nice shot.

  • Thanks James. Yes, Justin can be pretty persuasive. You’re right about the kingfisher, the kookaburra is related but it doesn’t eat fish. It dines on lizards and mice and worms. I think it’s also known as the laughing jackass because of it’s laugh-like call. I hear them around here every morning. God knows what the first European settlers thought when they first heard them.

The Kooka must have known your story, found you and posed in just the right spot, with no distractions … an excellent capture Gary !

  • Thanks for the fav, Trish. Yep, got real lucky with that one. And you might be right about the kooka… he was most cooperative. I’d only just arrived at the spot when he appeared a few seconds later. Then a woman drove up and he was eyeing her chips. Hehe. Maybe he’s a regular who gets fed by picnickers.

    Great capture of this beauty.

  • Yep, a most endearing species with a humorous call. Mind you, worms and lizards have a different point of view. Thanks for the comment.
