Fotheringham's by Gary Kelly
Size:
$2.40

There’s a story behind this ya know. I arrived at Mark’s barber shop at 2:25 and noticed the “Back at 3PM” sign on the door. Damn! So I thought bugger this, I’ll have a beer at the pub up the road. So I went to Fotheringham’s at Taree, Oz, and discovered that a middie of beer ain’t 2 bob anymore. It was $3.40! Bloody hell. Good thing I had a few quid on me otherwise I would’ve had to write a cheque.

Anyway, I asked the bar manager if it would be okay to take a pic of the taps and he said no worries. But the flash went off. So the lady he was talking to said, “Turn off the flash. You’ll get a better pic that way.”

Turn off the flash? How do I do that? I hate learning anything new. But I pressed a few buttons and hey presto, suppressed flash. Then I took a second pic.

No flash! Cool! I thanked the lady and she said, “I’m a photography teacher.”
“Really? A photography teacher? Seriously?”
“Yep.”
“Well, bloody hell, how about that.”

And here’s the pic. Fuji compact A180.

I’m a hobby photographer. In fact, I’m not sure Red Bubble should refer to me as an “artist”. But I do like to take photos that are above average, and certainly appreciate learning from my fellow Bubbleonian’s efforts as well as their comments. I use a second hand Sony Cybershot F717 (recently replaced by a new Nikon D3100) and a Fuji Finepix S7000. Photography allows me to keep souvenirs of my experiences. Today’s deeds become tomorrow’s memories.

Love the story behind the shot, it’s amazing the people you meet in the most unexpected places … hmmm … maybe not such an unexpected place! Is it really that long since you had a beer in a pub … plenty to choose from in this shot!
Did you remember to get the haircut?

  • Oh… this was supposed to be a reply to your comment but I put it in the wrong place. Old age ya know: No, it’s not that long since I was in pub, Trish, but I do remember the days when a middie cost 1/1… one shilling and one penny. And yes, I remembered to get the haircut. Now I look even more gorgeous than I did before.

We are all allowed an occasional “Senior’s Moment” … what’s the point of being a Senior if we are not!

  • Actually, Trish, I love the name Fotheringham’s. It’s under new management but they kept the name. But ya know what the locals call it? Fogs. Sheesh.

Great shot Gary, the people you meet eh! . Great story too Gary.
  • Thanks, Terry. Yep, of all people in the pub… and there were only 4 customers at the time… one was a photography teacher. There ya go. And I’ve learned something new.

Maybe the locals call it Fogs because they are in a bit of a fog leaving …

Excellent story Gary. Isn’t it great when you learn new things like that? You’ll be doing it all the time now :)

  • My father taught me to drive… or tried to. He said to my mum, “Gary will never get a license. He’s too nervous.” A year later I was a driving instructor.
