Bon Appetit
Alaskan Coastal Bear Catching Salmon on their return trip to their spawning Grounds.. This image is at Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park Alaska. It is the famous site you see on National Geographic etc channel/shows when they show bears catching salmon. It use to be more fun/excitement to traverse the quarter mile trail to the falls on the ground as you were in the woods where the bears are. ( and you were in a group of 20 people, you only have to out run one of them LOL..) now they have built a wooden walkway that is about 5 feet off the ground to get to the falls..They did this mainly so they could have a quick turnaround of people viewing the area. as they try to do this every hour. but when bears fall asleep on the trail .. It all comes to a stand still until the bears wake up.. I had one lucky occasion where I was at the falls for 3 hours as this is how long the bear slept on the trail. They won’t wake him up as he lives there and we are visiting.. at least that was the rangers take on it..LOL Hope you enjoy the image which is kind of the iconic image most strive for when photographing there..

Gary it is indeed an awesome place and you have done it justice here! When I was there 11 years ago the salmon were still holding in the lake due to low water so all I got were pretty bear pics. I think we saw one bear at the falls catch a salmon. Someday I must return, congratulations!
GaryGlass replied
Thanks Mundy, I had a great time there and was lucky enough to have gotten a photo like this.. It has changed since you were last there… you will probably remember the little 1/4 mile trail we had to go down to get to the banks… well the second year I went, they now have built a long foot ramp about 5 feet up off the ground and almost the whole link of that trail to ferry people to and back from the falls… mainly the reason was when a bear falls asleep on the trail. nobody goes any where until he wakes up..and sometimes that can be a hour or two, and they take groups every hour so you can see where this would hinder that and they came up with this idea of the ramp.. and probably to cut down on close encounters with the bears, which we did have when we went but usually they are so well fed from the salmon that they don’t really bother you.. I am glad I was able to do the trail as the ramp takes some of the fun out of getting there..
Mundy Hackett
Wow Gary, yes my how times have changed. I had encounters on that trail with a couple of bears while there, and we camped in the campground and had them outside our tent nightly. But as you said they could really care less about the funny two-legged creatures so long as you gave them right -of-way. I would hope to go back someday just to witness the marvel and wonder of it all again! Have you ever been to McNeil River sites?
GaryGlass replied
No, I have not been to McNeil, maninly because it is a lottery system to go there and I have not been lucky enough to win at it. of course I have not tried the last couple years.. I am trying to see if I can’t win a lottery turn at going into Denali Park.. That must have been interesting camping with them all about, I have not done that, just flown in for the day , photograph and fly out to Homer..
Jonathan Dower
oh wow, what an amazing shot. Well done.
