Probably my favorite yard bird for their intelligence and character. Considered by some to be noisy and the bully of the bird feeder, they add great color and their antics/behaviour is intriguing. I have seen them on many occasions take a peanut and go and hide it in a cedar or just feat away under a fallen leaf ( a temporary hiding place while they continue their raid on the cache of peanuts). Last Fall and again this Spring I witnessed one Jay dig a small hole in the dirt ( mouth fulls…), plant and hide the peanut in the hole before putting the earth back over the hole then some old leaves were put on top of that. A good hiding place except for the squirrels who will come along and use their noses to retrieve the treasure ’-)
