The first Snowy Owl of this day and another from Casselman Ontario Canada.. This image was shot an hour or two prior to my previous posting of Sub Zero/Snowy Owl. After taking a few initial shots I decided to get the moon in the shot. A second set of images using a borrowed 500F4 compressed everything too much so I stuck with the 400 F5.6 at F10 for this and a few other shots.
Canon 30D and 400 F5.6 L ISO 125. 1/1250 sec at F10 +1/3 exposure comp.

Amazing composition, Gary! Absolutely marvellous! Haven’t seen any snowies around here.
Thanks Mike and I got curious and checked,,,You are in Cornwall and this bird was photrographed about a one hour’s drive from Cornwall between St Isidore and Casselman Ontario. There were ( may still be even) at least three Snowy Owls in this same area this Winter and likely that they will be there next Winter as well. They aren’t as approachable this year although with this shot up on a pole its ususally no problem . I photographed one this Winter on what may be the same pole and she just sat there ( she was probably trying to get a nap) …Concession 19, 20 and St Rose are the roads to check…they are easy to spot on poles and tougher when they are on snow covered ground.

Beautiful shot with a very nice composition Gary. Well done!

Thanks Francine:-) The moon made the difference for me…The second time I get to shoot a Snowy with the moon in the BG…First time was in Orleans a few years ago and the bird was in a tree.

What ever you did, the result is excellent. Though the owl doesn’t look too impressed with its moony compadre.
Thanks and one of two things happened here. Either the bird was trying to get a nap and was annoyed at the clicking sounds coming from the two critters below ( I wish our cameras were dead quiet) or the late and bright sunlight was blinding her ( probably a combination of both) . It was going to be a clear night so the moon would have helped the Owl continue to hunt if it had not already had its fill (up to 12 voles a day I have read)
