A 601 Squadron RAF Spitfire Mk IXe, UF-Q / MJ250, in silver livery, catching the sunlight while looping the loop. Evoking the sonnet ‘High Flight’ by RCAF pilot John Gillespie Magee Jr.
The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight flies Spitfire Mk LFIXe MK356 painted to represent ‘The Silver Spitfire’ – which was the Mk IX MJ250 of 601 Squadron during the Italian campaign of 1944/45. No-one seems quite sure why it had a silver livery. My picture shows the original.
