Lancaster bombers take off from an airfield just as the sun goes down. The nearest, some 50 feet above the ground and now climbing at 130 mph, has 25 degrees of flap down to give greater lift with its ‘heavy’ all-up weight of 60,000lbs (27,000kgs). The four Merlin engines are roaring at 3,000rpm.
