EXCEPT FOR A MOUSE! Kiddy Story

EXCEPT FOR A MOUSE
by
Gary Crandall

‘Twas the night before Christmas
And all through the house
Not a creature was stirring
Except for a mouse!

The mouse and his buddies
Were having great fun
Opening presents
And playing with each one

I crept down the stairway
To watch this event
Three mice a-playing
With great merriment

I’d never seen mice
Having such fun
“Over here, Elmo!”
A mouse called to one

As they spoke to each other
I learned each one’s name
Elmo and Sandi
Rode by on a train

The third mouse was cute
‘Cause his whiskers would wiggle
Chris Mouse they called him
And his name made me giggle

By a tiny mouse fireplace
A Momma mouse sat
Rocking her baby
Not far from a cat

The cat’s name was Fergie
And the mice were his friends
They’d lived there together
For years upon end

After a while
The mice made me wish
That I had some whiskers
And a tail I could swish

And some ears and a nose
To twitch with delight
To play with these mice
On this Christmas night

I saw Sandi stretch up
On her little tip toes
Lighting a candle
In her pretty mouse clothes

Then just before dawn
The sun on the rise
The candle’s hot air
Brought a Christmas surprise!

Out there on the lawn
Before people were up
Each mouse took a ride
In a small Dixie cup

The cat watched with wonder
As skyward they flew
Laughing and waving
On up in the blue

They flew ‘cross the meadows
The valleys and hills
Giggling with glee
At the little mouse thrills

When they had landed
The cat brought them back
And quickly they scurried
And started to pack

All the presents and wrappings
So no one would know
The mice shared their Christmas
By the warm fire’s glow

By sunlight the presents
Were back in their place
Neatly under the tree
Not even a trace

Of the fun and the laughter
The three mice had shared
The adventures they’d had
And the thrills they had dared

Then to my surprise
As they rounded the stair
Sandi smiled at me
Like she knew I was there

Without having said so
She knew that I shared
In their fun and their laughter
And felt how I cared

I ran back to bed
And pretended to sleep
Then faintly I heard
A little mouse peep

Did I really see Elmo
And Sandi and Chris?
Or was all this a dream
I would have to dismiss?

I got up with the family
And stood by the tree
We opened our presents
And the train was for me!

I picked up the engine
And there found my clue
A little pink bow
‘Twas then that I knew

It had been for real
I had not just dreamed
My little mouse friends
Were as real as they seemed

‘Twas the night before Christmas
And all through the house
Not a creature was stirring…
Except for a mouse!
