My memorial to the 30th anniversary of the death of Canada’s favourite son, Terry Fox, who died on the 28th of June 1981.
Terry was a sportsman and athlete who had his left leg amputated due to cancer and upon learning of the first amputee to complete the New York marathon vowed to run across Canada, ocean to ocean, to raise funds for cancer research and awareness.
With the help of an artificial leg Terry ran 5,373 kilometers over 143 days straight, the equivalent of a marathon a day, before the cancer returned and spread to his lungs forcing him to abandon ‘The marathon of hope’ at Thunder Bay just short of his final destination. He died nine months later in hospital never to finish is journey.
It has been said Terry’s marathon of hope was in vain and only sped up his illness, but the hope and admiration instilled in the hearts of not only Canadians but people of every nationality far outweighed the monetary gain of the run.
Terry Fox ran in blue Adidas Orion trainers..
Drawn in a combination of Prisma and Faber Castell coloured pencils with a black ink background on a 30×40 hot press bainbridge illustration board.
