Top of the world, ma by Gary Fernandez

A coloured drawing from a black and white photo of James Cagney done in a combination of Prisma and Faber Castell pencils on a cold press illustration board, 25×30cm.
Done specifically for a t-shirt design.

I am a self taught coloured pencil artist residing in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia. My passion at the moment is human portraiture, especially celebrities, as due to their high profile nature the margin for error is minute and an intriguing challenge. I also do commissions, both human and non-human, when the occasion arises. Thank you for viewing my work and feel free to leave any comments, good or bad, and I will certainly respond.

I knew that was yours as soon as I saw it in the image thread. Love to watch his old movies. You have really captured the “Cagney Look”. Wonderful colored pencil piece.

  • Many thanks Kate, your comments are always so appreciated. I’m not sure if I got the hair colour right as its hard to tell from coloured black and white photos, it that makes sense.

uh-huh, I do, I do. I think his hair was a blondish-reddish color, so you are on target.

Gary, this is really splendid work. You really captured Cagney’s “inner fire.” He was one of my all-time favorites.

  • Thanks John for that great comment, and yes he was one of my all time favourites as well, he could ‘light up’ any portrayal.
