Suffragette Flora by Jacki Stokes

An encaustic painting, evocative of the flora of a rain forest. (Although Donny says he can see a woman’s legs and skirt in this – so she could be called Flora). I painted this in my favourite colours of green, white and violet (or more usually purple) which also happen to be the colours of the Suffragette movement – Green White Violet – standing for Give Women the Vote.

Nature is my passion and inspiration for my art. I started out by photographing it, but now I love to paint it as well.
I have been painting with watercolour for many years now, and I am still amazed and continually excited by this most magical of mediums. I’m still on my journey of discovery; a journey which I hope will never end. Every time I pick up my paintbrush I wonder where the paint will lead me.
Another magical medium, which I am enthralled by, is encaustics.

Before I read the description, I could see a woman’s legs and skirt. LOL. Excellent work Jacki.

  • Maybe it’s a man thing? Anyway thank you for your lovely feedback – much appreciated.

Ooo Love encaustic wax. Certainly wakes up the imagination !

  • Yes Val – I love playing with encaustics too. I like to think of it as “releasing your inner creativity”. Anyone can do it – you don’t have to be able to paint or draw, but you do need to select your colours carefully, be open to ideas, watch extremely carefully all the time and be making judgements continually, and most importantly know when to stop. I did this one as a demo for a small workshop that I was running. I expected the demo to last about a quarter of an hour maybe half an hour. I was completely flummoxed when after 2 minutes – I said “oh it’s finished” – because it was – there was no point in carrying on and spoiling it. The students were a bit surprised too! Good when it works out like that though.

Agree with both men lol, can see legs, a bit blue lol! I love the colours Jacki, really beautiful work! x

  • Thanks for the great feedback Pauline. It’s funny isn’t it but once my friend Donny had said he saw legs – that’s all I could see too! It’s a bit like the faces vs vase illusion. As you say – nice colours though. LOL
