Jacki Stokes at Garden View Studio
I’m in love with colour and I’m in love with strong vibrant luminous watercolour. For me, although the act of painting is very much about the subject, it’s also very much about exploring the wonderful interactions of the paint.

Watercolour is magical – I like to watch it blend and flow and react, often letting it do it’s own thing, in the knowledge that no two paintings could ever be the same. I use strong washes of wet in wet colour, often using mixed media and experimental techniques to achieve exciting effects and textures.

Although I’ve been painting with watercolour for many years now, I am still amazed and continually excited by this most magical of mediums. I’m still on my journey of discovery; a journey which I hope will never end. Every time I pick up my paintbrush I wonder where the paint will lead me.

I also love to paint abstract encaustics because, once heated, encaustic wax is also a very fluid medium, and the subtle fusions of pure bold colour are fascinating to observe and experiment with.

These paintings and photographs are my response to the spirit and the joy of Nature.

I am happy to create personalised Calendars using any of my Pictures that you choose – just email me.

Upcoming for 2013

I trade as Garden View Studio selling an ever changing range of high quality greetings cards, featuring prints of my paintings and photographs, to independent retailers and direct to the public.
Cards and prints are always available online from RedBubble – please click on my shop tab to see the range.

I’m also branching out into Tees, Hoodies, Babywear, Calendars and iPhone cases on RedBubble – be sure to take a look.

This year I will be running some taster workshops for those who have been inspired by my abstract encaustic paintings and by my experimental watercolour techniques. If you’ve been inspired by my work and you live near Taunton UK, please contact me and I will add you to my mailing list.

In September I will be taking part in Somerset Art Weeks at the lovely Bishops Hull House in Taunton, along with Nicky Clarke, Heather Hughes and Sheila Rendell. More details nearer the time.

Red in watercolour

Marsha asked me which Red I used in this painting: - / Here’s my answer: - / Hmmm – reds are a problem aren’t they? Personally I prefer to keep only transparent colours in my flower painting palette, so that I keep that vibrancy. That means that I can’t use Cadmium Red which is opaque. Also reds can look lovely when they are wet, but dry very flat. So depending on the type of red I’m after,…

Girls just want to have fun!

I feel that I’ve become a bit bogged down with my painting over the last few months. I feel that I’m beginning to take myself a bit too seriously: this is mostly driven by the desire to earn a small income from my painting and card sales. As we all know – painting because it is a passion – purely for ourselves, and painting because we want to produce something that will be…

Does your computer need a zimmer frame to navigate the web?

I’ve just got to share this: - / My poor old computer has been getting slower and slower. It doesn’t help that I’m handling lots of high resolution image files here on RedBubble. Anyway due to problems uploading images on RB, my friend Lee suggested that I change from Internet Explorer to Google Chrome. Thought I’d try Motzilla first seeing as I already had it installed. M…

Does failure undermine your reputation as an accomplished artist?

Does failure undermine your reputation as an accomplished artist? / I once had the honour of knowing a very talented artist called Pauline de Braux. Unfortunately she died quite soon after I met her, but for the short time that I knew her, she shared some of her wisdom with me. One of the things she said to me was “You will always be judged by your worst work”. I didn’t take muc…
