This honeysuckle as beckoned me for years to set it down on paper. Each spring it grows higher and higher, with the blossoms ‘way up there, too, so I figured I’d better paint it soon, or it would be out of reach!
Painted on Arches 140 cold press paper, 8-1/2"x 8-1/2"
Besides photographing things I find beautiful, I love to paint in watercolor! It can be loads of fun, creating its own beautiful color combinations as they run together on the paper, or it can be surprisingly independent, doing “its own thing” where you pretty much have to give up control – one never knows! That’s all just part of the fun!

That is lovely Pat, it looks like it came straight out of my garden now.
I’m so glad you have one, too, Mik – they’re always such a fragrant addition to spring. Thanks for your lovely comment, my friend!

Hi, Sally – I really appreciate your stopping by, and for your lovely comment!

Your comment made me smile, I too have a large honeysuckle vine/brush and have wanted to paint parts of it for years now. As beautiful as this is Pat, this just may be the inspiration I needed.
You’re so kind, Jim! You might read my reply to Val Spayne below, where I point out some of the challenges inbued in trying to paint honeysuckles. Good luck and happy painting, my friend!

Beautiful water colour of one of my favorite flowers Pat.
It’s nice to meet you, Cal! Thank you! This past year I’ve been enjoying webinars from an eastern Canadian artist, Johannes Vluithoos, on Saturdays. His website is called “ImproveMyPaintings,” and I’ve learned more this year from him than anyone I’ve ever known.

Honeysuckle comes through our fence from our neighbour….smells wonderful. Have painted it but not very sucessfully.Inspired by this lovely painting to have another go sometime. I wonder did you mask out the flower first?
Hi, Val – Yes, I did mask out the flowers and leaves first. The most difficult part was that even though the photos I’d taken are really beautiful, the three I chose to incorporate into this painting all had the sunlight coming from different directions. This meant I had to imagine just where the shadows would actually fall, as well as the light, when they were the opposite from the photos. Don’t think I’ll try that again! I may give a go at honeysuckles again, but not for awhile. The main challenge is trying to paint such a delicate flower when it is so airy – the background becomes more dominant than one would like it. I hope these comments will help you to try it and hopefully overcome the challenges in your beautiful way!
