Watercolor "Autumn Gold" Rhododendron by

Saltspring Island, just off Vancouver Island, is a peaceful spot to go to simply enjoy the beauty of the water, the sea birds, and the fir trees. And the Northwest’s plants are in their glory there! This watercolor painting is of one of the very colorful rhododendrons we found there one spring. “Autumn Gold” is its actual name.

Painted on Arches 140 lb. cold press paper

Besides photographing things I find beautiful, I love to paint in watercolor! It can be loads of fun, creating its own beautiful color combinations as they run together on the paper, or it can be surprisingly independent, doing “its own thing” where you pretty much have to give up control – one never knows! That’s all just part of the fun!

These are beautiful mix of colours

  • Thank you, Kala! There’s a story behind those colors — The first color I used was a vivid bright orange around the centers of the blooms. It looked absolutely garish! I thought it was ruined! But I had spent so much time drawing it that I thought, “So even if I’ve ruined it, I’ll still continue painting it, just to practice.” Then, as I added other colors, the brilliant orange became more subdued in their presence, and to my amazement, all the colors, working together, made the painting “work”. Kind of like a sports team!
