  • Pat Yager replied

  • Yvonne Less

    Yvonne Less

It’s BEAUTIFUL! I like it very much! How long did it take to paint this beauty?

  • Pat Yager replied

I’m so pleased you like it, Yvonne! Thank you! I honestly couldn’t give you a time frame on this one, as it was done in “bits and pieces,” so to speak. With watercolor, there is so much “drying time” needed, because you can’t paint immediately next to a petal or leaf (or anything else) that has just been painted, or the colors will run into each other. Of course, that is one of the fun things about watercolor in the “looser” style, where the colors do “take charge” and run together. It just depends on how much control the artist wishes to have over the results. – Pat

    jansnow

This is gorgeous! Watercolor is so difficult I haven’t dared try it yet:-) Well done!

  • Pat Yager replied

Hi, Jan! I made the switch from oils to watercolor 16 or 17 years ago, and honestly haven’t looked back, altho’ I occasionally flirt with the idea of getting out my oils again. I still love them, but I find that with WC, it only takes two minutes to get fresh water and pick up a brush – super easy and fast set-up. AND believe it or not, the “difficulty” of watercolor isn’t all it’s cracked up to be! It’s immensely easier that I had been led to believe, and it’s so much fun! Why don’t you buy just three colors of WC paint, and one piece of genuine watercolor paper, and just experiment? I think you’d really find it fun! And there are LOADS of helpful instruction books out there to help get you started. Thanks, by the way for your kind comment on this begonia – it really was fun to do! – Pat

I just saw this beautiful painting and was taken aback. What a beautiful painting! It always challenges me and encourages me to see lovely work as this. Like you, I have to figure out when the best time is to paint and to put the best forth for my painting. Choices, like you said.

    Allison

  • Pat Yager replied

Hello, Allison! I really appreciate your taking the time to write as you have! Thank you for your encouragement and kind words. Yes, it is always a challenge to make myself actually sit down and paint, although it is truly the thing I love most to do. To me it is a luxury to take the time to paint, and “something” inside me tries to tell me that before I can indulge myself in a luxury, I have to get all my work done first. So I have to force myself not to listen to that voice – not an easy thing to do! What do you find is your biggest challenge in trying to find time to paint? – Pat

Oh my Lord! Dear Pat He really bless you with a tremendous talent! Your work is just stunning!! so beautiful and masterful done!!! I wish to be better with watercolor but sadly I’m not very good with this medium, love it, but it’s not very easy to do, you are more than great with it!

Well, after a very long journey through the comments list, I hardly have the breath to say wonderful. Luckily the card above saves me the trouble of referring back, as the only thing I could remember to say was ‘How many colours of pink are there ?’ You seem to have covered the whole range, which gives wonderful feeling of depth and vibrancy.

  • Pat Yager

    Pat Yager 21 days ago

I love your sense of humour, John! Thanks for taking the time to scroll! If I remember correctly, I used primarily Quinacridone Pink and Quinacridone Fuchsia, and probably a bit of Q. Rose as well. I honestly don’t remember specifically on the purple tones, but probably Winsor Violet and a mix of Q. Rose and French Ultramarine. It was either Q. Pink or Q. Fuchsia with which I had to work very rapidly because it wanted to “set” almost immediately rather than blending with the next brushstroke. Next time I’m planning to add a little gum arabic to extend the setting time a bit. I’ve found that most greens really like to do that as well, setting too quickly, so I’m hoping the gum arabic will give me a little more time to work with them. I hope I haven’t gotten too technical on you here, but am just trying to answer your “pink” question. I’m glad this one appeals to you, John, and thanks for stopping by, my friend! ~ Pat
