"Marwood Spring" Magnolia Watercolor
With Brian Haslam’s permission, I’ve painted his beautiful pink and magenta magnolia called “Marwood Spring” here. Thank you so much, Brian! Painted on Arches 140 Cold Press with mostly Daniel Smith’s quinacridone colors. And I hope you will be as thrilled as I was with Brian’s RB portfolio! It’s gorgeous!

Randall Scholten
Yes indeed, this is VERY nice! And I don’t even know what a quinacridone is :-)
Pat Yager replied
LOL! I’m glad you like it anyway, Randall! The quinacridones are a series of red, pink, rose, magenta, and gold colors that are very translucent, and allow an artist to paint layer after layer over them while still retaining the fidelity of the colors beneath, i.e. they don’t become “muddy” when other colors are painted over them. I believe the quinacridones were first used as paints for vehicles, and have since come into their own in the art world. How’s THAT for a lesson?! LOL
Randall Scholten
Thanks for the explanation! My lesson for the day!

CONGRATULATIONS, Pat on your feature in Spring Blooms.I
I do like magnolias – I’ve got three I brought with me when I moved house and garden two years ago but as it is a much smaller garden I’ll probably have to clip their wings if they thrive. Any advice, gardenerpat?
It was interesting to find out more about the qinacridones.
Pat Yager replied
Hi, Susan! Thank you for your kind comments! I wish I had a magnolia tree – one of these years I’d love to have one! I notice that you’re interested in collage within your paintings. Two books by Gerald Brommer I’ve come to really like are “Watercolor & Collage Workshop” and “Emotional Content: How to Create Paintings That Really Communicate”. You might check them out at a library or bookstore. – Pat
