Kingman, Arizona – one stop along the Mother Road, Route 66. So many memories of childhood and our family treks east and then back west again. I remember motels at night, listening to the whine of tires and the sound of engines, the occasional train whistle. Surely, this is when my lust for travel began. Joni Mitchell said it best… I’m porous with travel fever.
I remember those exciting long drives as a child too. I used to love the colours on the dashboard at night.
You too? I loved, loved, loved them. We would leave late afternoon and drive across the desert at night (no AC in the car back then)… I remember him always wanting to get to Gallup, NM. We had one of those canvas water bags that hung on the radiator… remember those? :D
Those trips are among the most sentimental memories I have of my childhood. The sound of the the car, the road. The lights the cities, the bridges. All powerful memories of a strange comfort and security. I don’t remember the water bags but I remember they made the night magic, not like home but… magic and meditative. Thanks for this Gail. I haven’t thought of these things for sooo long.
speaking of meditative and magical… have you listened to “Into The Wild” soundtrack? Eddie Vedder wrote the entire soundtrack… and it’s an amazing listen, especially while traveling at night.
Wow, this is a terrific image. I have many memories of Route 66 and thanks for making me remember.
Thank you, Ronnie… i often think that the only ppl that can understand how being on the road makes me feel… are those with the same memories from childhood… one that always brings a smile to my face is the 25 cent “massaging” magic finger bed… :D
