The Wash up Part 3

So ends the Game of Kings
An almighty effort from
A lot of friends.

So after nearly three years from original idea and four months in rolling out, the Game of Kings The Battle has finally been completed.

Simon and I had the final task of actually finishing up with most of the group’s artists not knowing how the story would end.
Poor Simon was still doing finishing touches up to the last minute.
I actually saw it as a bit of a reward for the others to still have a touch of mystery in the project right up to the wire.

All up Phase Two The Battle was a very successful venture, totally different in style and release from the First phase back in 2009 (was it that long ago) where in that section we introduced characters and established roles and personalities for each piece that would culminate i…

How the Battle was Built - the Bullrock

Of all the creatures and characters that I’ve created over the years, the monstrous beast that is the Bullrock stands tentacle-trunked head and shoulders above the rest.

The rook is a powerful piece on the board, capable of striking an enemy from across the board, yet restrained and single-minded in it’s design, as it can only travel in straight lines. From the outset, I had it in mind that whatever represented the rooks in my Black Army had to represent forces of nature, barely constrained by the power of their King, and something to be feared.

To that end, I looked for examples in folklore that could inspire me, and I was immediately struck by the biblical Behemoth and Leviathon, two immense creatures (one of the land, the other of the sea). From there, I started construct…

How the Battle was Built - Behind the Scenes with BMB

When searching for additional talent to swell the ranks of the GoK Army, I knew that Melbourne-based comicker and all-round crazyman BMB would be a perfect fit. Here’s a little background and behind-the-scenes info from the man himself – Simon

I remember it like it was only 16 months ago, Simon asked if I’d be interested
in joining in for Round Two of the GoK, my first instinct was to decline because
nothing shows your shortcomings like putting your art up side by side with
people who surpass you in all ways except possibly in the baking of certain
flavoured cakes. I dare you to try and better banana cake me!

Ahem, after saying yes I was given my two pieces, we had a pretty long deadline
so I really didn’t think about it too much, I just wanted the pictures to happen
in my he…

Game of Kings - SHOW US YOUR TALENT update

:

During the roll out of the Game of Kings Phase Two – The Battle, we have been running a little challenge to coincide with the release.
When I run a competition I like to challenge the artists and the SHOW US YOUR TALENT is no exception.
I salute the current crop of entries.

So far the response has been nothing short of spectacular with great artists going beyond the boundaries of the normal competitions we usually run here on Red bubble and contributing marvellous pieces of art, models, music, film making and even cakes.
All add to the eclectic mix that is the Game of Kings.

The details are “HERE”: http://www.redbubble.com/groups/the-game-of-kin... we are extending the deadline till …

How the Battle was built - the Rock Titan

One of the hardest pieces to draw in my opinion would have to have been the Rock Titan. This ancient being that is as old as the land it inhabits and is one of only two entities who remember the White King as a fallen Angel.
The Titan remembers him as a kind King, long before he went insane with desire to return to heaven at any cost.

White King’s Rook – Early concept sketch

This piece of White King’s Castle (Rook) was handed to Lily M and with it she created Mountain monster complete with forest ,castle and village running up its spine.

As Lily puts it herself:

A stone titan to combat Simon’s sea monster…I was reading that the game of chess has origins in Persia. I think I would be interesting to base my pieces on ancient Persian designs. The name “Rook” comes from the Pers

How the Battle was built - Interview with Danny Nolan

When the last of the 32 characters in the Game of Kings armies was released in 2009 the project was far from over. It was always an option to have these mighty armies battling off against one another.

While everyone was away working on other things and generally getting on with their lives Danny Nolan was in constant contact with Simon Sherry about making a Phase Two. Danny had always agreed with Simon that the concept had huge potential but as Simon is fond pointing out “things take time”.

Danny had worked with all the other Phase One artists in developing biographies and back stories for the characters fleshing out the project so it didn’t consist of 32 individual characters with no common thread. The end result was a popular T Shirt based release, two distinct armies and enough back s…

THE HALFTIME HORN HAS SOUNDED!

Well friends, the battle has begun in earnest, with the two sides meeting each other in a viscous collision of might and metal. But like all good spectator sports, the siren has sounded and half-time has been called!

Monday July 8, the battle resumes, but in the interim, watch this virtual space for a parade of halftime entertainment. From behind the scenes musings to bonus artwork, prints and tees, to hints of what is to come, the next couple of weeks will have plenty to keep you intrigued.

I’d also personally like to open the floor to questions, commentary and the like over in this journal. We’ve been working our collective psyches off to produce this lumbering beast, and we’d love to here what YOU think of it. Shower us with adulation or condemnation, posit questions…
