The Younger

This old stove has probably cooked more hot dinners than I’ve ever had.
Taken in an old disused shearing quarters.
Those were the days eh. When the shearers would all stay ‘on site’ in the shearers quarters (usually made out of corrugated iron), & ate the meals that the hired cook would prepare.
A roast leg of lamb, crunchy baked vegies, sweet tender peas. Picked from the garden. Real gravy.
Yep, things sure have changed.

The meal you describe Gail sounds just like the one our large group had last Father’s Day. They don’t come often and probably just as well. This looks like it ought to have been a very busy stove, but one that could carry on preparing many more meals – now, where are the cooks?

When I find the cooks Warren, I’ll let you know. No such thing as fast food them days. Thanks.

What a great find Gail!!! I cant imagine cooking on something like this. I would never be able to figure out how much wood to add to get the correct cooking temperature. This actually makes me really happy all I have to do is push a button on my microwave oven…lol. I could see this framed and hanging in a modern kitchen. Great shot!!

Yes Gail I can relate to that. We have shearers quarters on this property the same as you describe. You have given me an Idea and that is to go and photograph them. Wonderful capture indeed.

Thanks Noelene. How much stuff is under our noses & we don’t see it? I probably should be outside now seeing what the early morning light is doing.

I was bought up on cooking from an old fuel stove Gail….my first stove when I left home was an old fuel stove and a chip heater for hot water!!!!! Had to have a good wood supply!!! I love them….they used to check the oven temperature by putting flour on a tray and seeing how long it took to brown!!!! Wonderful image…lots of memories!!! *-)

Great little stove—it’s nice having that little oven between the fireboxes. Be great in an outdoor kitchen even today.
I see there’s running water in the kitchen, too. What will they think of next? lol

  • GailD

GailD in reply to Dayonda’s comment, about 1 month ago

Maybe an electric stove. Gee, that would be novel. Thanks Dayonda.
