Great capture! It looks so alien.

  • Hi Bunny, why thank you my friend. Yes I wouldn’t want to see this alien as big as an elephant, I’d be running.

  • Hi Christina, thank you so much. Yes I just love his painted eyes. It’s a hawk moth, I just wished I could have found the moth.

Excellent, Gabe. I think that is Theretra latreillii , but it could be T. nessus or T. queenslandi or T. tryoni

  • Hi Andrew, how are you buddy? Thank you so much for all those reference, I’ve just been through them all and it was different to them all. Not sure what hawk moth but I can tell you the host plant is a Ornamental Grape Vine Boston Ivy and they hover around my Stephanotis which I think they drink from.

I found an interesting caterbug a few weeks ago which I thought was an Old Lady or a Gothic. It eclosed yesterday…an Angle Shades. A pretty moth but quite a common one. Oh well, the important thing was that it was healthy and flew away.
    Lovely clear shot, Gabe

  • Hi there Jesika, thank you my friend! Guess what? I finally bought a plastic glass house to house my caterpillars in. This last season was too wet and cool, we didn’t get many butterflies. Now that I have the glasshouse to keep them in, we will be trying to see if we can get a few to stay alive to full maturity without the birds getting them.

A terrific shot Gabe. Why did you put the little sticker on it???? LOL

  • Hehehee! Al that is a little painted eye which helps to scare the birds off! It didn’t work as the birds ate this little fella the very next day! Sad but he ended up in the food chain of life! Some little birdy got a juicy fat meal! LOL!
