I just love Rosella’s and every year they try to nest in this birdhouse, this bit of real estate gets many inspections but unfortunately the tenants are too fat for the doorway.

I did one year, get hubby up on a ladder with a jigsaw to widen one of the holes to see if they would nest there. I felt really bad that I had built an ornamental birdhouse and thought I could fix the problem.

Unfortunately after we altered the hole, they didn’t like that nest so for months and months they would go to the other holes and see if they could squeeze in them.

Totally frustrated that I had ruined my birdhouse which took over 30 hours to build, I glued the moulding back over the hole and lucky it hid the cutout.

Funny thing after it was fixed, the Rosella’s promptly went back to their favourite hole, it’s the one he’s sitting on. The other rooms don’t get a look in.

I tnink birds are so fascinating! You sure went thru alot of work to help satisfy these beautiful little birds, wow they are gorgeous! Beautiful capture and great story Gabe!

  • Hi Tina, how are you my friend? Thank you for taking the time to read my description, yes these parrots are such beautiful birds to have in the garden, they are one of my favourite and I felt really bad that I had made a birdhouse that they couldn’t breed in. It was very frustrating to see them not take up the accommodation. I’ve been watching them from the kitchen window and they are just the sweetest birds, they sound beautiful. It would be nice if they could breed there but this birdhouse sticks out in my round garden in the middle of the back yard and it’s sort of exposed. I get heaps of eagles and kites flying over. I still have another breeder box in the shed that I built and haven’t put in a tree yet. I got the specs off the net for these parrots. I should really get the nest in the tree, it’s breeding season.

Nice one Gabe ..how funny , they say you shouldn’t work with kids & aminals ( birds too ) – just when you think you have it figured out they just throw you into a spin again !! – Love it !

Great capture, that is one beautiful bird. We try and help them out and in the end, they liked it the way it was. Sounds familiar…Nice looking house though, someone will come along and enjoy the inside one day.

  • Hehehee! Thanks Rebecca, the only bird in my garden that could fit into this house would be the Fairy Wrens but the squeekies have run them out of the garden so I don’t have any small birds at the moment.

We’ve always had nest boxes, bee hotels, butterfly hiding holes and nothing seems to be right for these fussy little creatures. But a mouse seriously investigated one of the bird boxes (no idea how it got up there!) & then decided it wasn’t good enough…
    Lovely, delightful story.

  • Hi Jesika, thank you for the lovely comment! :) xx I agree, the more we do, they change their minds. I got a pic the other day of a snake in a birdhouse, now that was just creepy. Glad I haven’t seen them in mine. I’ve got indian minors trying to nest in my barn and they are definately not welcome here. Their the rats of the sky. Hey I’m thinking of getting myself a bee hive, I’ve got to do a bit of investigation and see if I can put one down the back of the property, not near the horses of course. I’ll let you know how I get on.

  • Hi Maggie, thank you my friend! :) Yes it is lovely having these beautiful birds in the garden. I wish they were a little less timid. It’s hard to get too close but they have the most beautiful bird song. You’d love them.

A splendid story and capture! Did you try just making a new bird house with a bigger hole? I think it would be wonderful to have Rosellas nest in your backyard. This is one of your Australian birds I get to enjoy for myself as I have two of them as pets. I love their whistling songs. :)

  • Have you Bob? WOW I just love these birds, I love their song and chatter, they are so cute. I’m glad you have two as pets then you know how I feel about these birds. So cute!

    Thanks buddy! :)

Nice looking birdhouse Gabe. What was it originally built for? Well the Rosella seems very interested in it and you never know when the breeding season starts they might hop in.

  • Hi Ralph, thank you my friend! :) This birdhouse was only built for my garden, I never thought a bird would like to live in it, it was just for looks! I’ve got a few breeder boxes to put up. Just need to con hubby. He’s out in the shed now making me some legs for this project that I’ve got in mind. Can’t push my luck today, he’s not happy! LOL!
