Found this way cool caterpillar on my ornamental grape vine. It’s big, fat and chunky! Over 4 inches long. I just loved it’s fake eyes for the birds. :)

I think it’s a Hawk Moth Caterpillar. If anyone knows it’s rightful name, I’d be most interested! :)

OK thanks Robert, it’s a Vine Sphinx Moth Caterpillar.

  • hehehehe! Thanks Jill, I’m trapped in the land of the giants! Do you remember that old show when we were young? Everything was like 10 ft tall.

This macro is opening up a whole new world and I don’t even have to get out of the yard. I am getting a bit sick of my wasps killing all my caterpillars though! :( They have to go! LOL!

Thanks so much for the lovely comment! Yes I was pretty excited to find this big chubby caterpillar in the garden today. Found 3 of them eating all of my ornamental grape vine. Had to get him upset before his big eyes opened up.

I think that it’s a caterpillar from the Vine Sphinx Moth, I was lucky to get a shot of one in The Dominican Republic a few years ago. Lovely find and capture Gabrielle.

  • Hi Robert, thanks so much for that! :) Yes I think this might be the moth. I have a Stephanotis Vine and it just loves it and comes in at night. I haven’t seen it for a while but I’ll try and capture a shot of him if I ever see him again. I remember he’s got beaty eyes and glow in the dark! lOL!

When these caterpillar species feel threatened they can puff themselves up and take on the Sphinx pose. You are right it is a member of the Hawkmoth family

  • Hehhehe! You know I worked that one out. I wanted his eyes to unfold from his layers of fat and just gave him a slight squeeze! Pop out comes the eyes. Rather facinating! :)

I’ve got some shot of the Elephant Hawk Moth caterpillar in the Sphinx pose. I’ve found several species of hawk moth caterpillars during my travels and the largest was the Death Head Hawk Moth.

  • Have you got pictures of them on your channel? I’ll just pop in now to see if I can find them. Really interested! :)
