Mayor of Casterbridge Rose and Birdhouse by

This is one of my first birdhouses that I built, the rose is a David Austin rose called Mayor of Casterbridge. The fragrance is just like that sweet old fashion rose powder perfume.

This rose grows like a pillar rose and stands 3 metres tall.

I didn’t realize you were such a handy person Gabe. Beautifully done. Do you get any birds nesting in it? If so what type?

  • Hi Ralph, I’ve had Rosella’s trying to nest in this birdhouse every year but the holes are too small, we did pull off one of the mouldings last year and cut out the hole a bit larger, I felt guilty that I only made it an ornamental birdhouse. After a bit of mucking around, we enlarged one hole for the birds, the birdhouse has four boxes inside so I left the other three alone, they didn’t like that one and kept going to the other three, awwh go figure! :( It drove me nuts! :( I’m telling you Rosella’s are fickle! :(

I only recently replaced the moulding, it was offensive to my eye and I couldn’t get a photo! :(

Thanks for that Gabe. I thought if you were successful with these bird boxes then maybe you could give me some tips.

  • Hi Ralph, if you want to make breeder boxes for the wild birds it’s easier to make them out of old logs, I’ve made a few, my dad pinched one off me and he’s got baby Rosella’s in them now. You get problems here with Indian Minors killing the babies by pulling them out of the nest. I’ve had to close the holes from several bird boxes that I’ve made, when we open the holes, the Indian Minors either move in or they kill the Rosella’s. I’ve got the Galah’s breeding in the Camphor Laurel tree, they’ve just made their own nest. That’s where also the Rosella’s and Herons bred their too.

If you want me to show you how they look I can always take a photo for you! :)

That would be great Gabe if you could do that for me. I have always wanted to have some boxes/logs around our yard but did not know enough about them. Aren’t you lucky to have Galah’s, Rosella’s and Heron’s nesting in your garden.

  • Hahhaha! Sorry Ralph, I’ve only just seen this message here tonight, it’s nearly midnight on Sunday, I’ll get back to you hopefully tomorrow. I’ve got a birdhouse sitting in the shed you might like, I could post it to you but the postage would kill me, it’s a log! LOL!

I’ll post a few photos so you can get an idea. I’d be happy to make you one but you live so far away. :(
