Kindred Spirits - BFFL
This was a”photo shoot” as they like to call it….between my daughter and her best friend. There were many happy silly moments between them as we were doing this and my oldest daughter kaila had her shots at this too….for a school photography project but with a much, much better camera, seems a little strange but she has a great camera and me …....her mom does not !!!! lol
I chose to add this particular image, not because of It’s clarity or such but rather because their beauty and their kindred spirits were captured in a little tiny moment….as I saw it, however I am Biased and I’m sure there is room for improvement so if you have suggestions please bmail me. I recently acquired photo shop but I only know how to use image size and the burn tool lol .
I think black and white photographs are difficult especially when working with two different skin tones so any suggestions are welcome in a bmail :) Thank you RB people :)

Thanks Robert :)

Click on the little arrow on the bottom right hand of the burn tool and you’ll also find the dodge tool. A tiny bit of highlight dodge on both their eyes to enhance them will make this even better. Lovely shot, Lisa!

Where on their eyes ? in their eyes or around their eyes…..I’m dumbfounded and I’ve tried the dodge tool once and made a hideous mess of it…..he he he I guess I should practice :)
Steven Agius
I reckon this looks great Lisa, the tones as well as the girls faces look perfect !
Mel Brackstone
Dodge tool will brighten up the whites, or lights. Use it at just 5% or so opacity, and use it gently, on a duplicate layer, adding sweeps of the tool till you get to the lightness you want. I NEVER use it on anything over 10% opacity….. So check it’s on highlights, change the opacity DOWN….and play with it gently….it’ll be your friend in no time :)

No need to reply…...Me no speak Chinese hurrrrrrrrrrrr Ok. that’s why you are you and I am me he he he…..this is so funny…....I’m still trying to figure this out, I hope you don’t mind a bmail from time to time ….huh ? just until I figure this stuff out :)
Mel Brackstone
Oh…same goes for the burn tool….soft brush, low opacity, shadows first, midtones second, highlights hardly ever. Good luck :)

bmail any time, Lisa.

This is an awesome shot. I was going to suggest some tips of how I deal with BW shots, but Mel’s been there and back so you should try to follow her advice. What I would suggest is that if you find yourself really getting into Photoshop, buy a drawing tablette. This lets you work with a pen as well as a mouse and will let you trace areas that you might want to adjust or layer better than you can with a mouse. If you’re interested, BM me and I can give you more info. But as far as this shot goes, it is magic. My daughter and her friends have been the subject of many similar shoots and I treasure them all. Nice work, and good luck with your learning curve!!

Thanks BB but deep down inside, I’m afraid to make photo shop my friend…for fear that I will neglect my family lol…these darn, fun creative things can take up an entire day :)
Thanks for offering to help…..so expect at least a couple bmail BB :)

You are SO right… that’s why I’ve been banned from heaven. BM away, but beware… for me it’s too late, but there is still time for you to just say NO!!

they really do look like kindred spirits – they look so innocent and beautiful. A really lovely portrait of the two of them – i think they will look back on this photograph with a very big smile.
