Inward lie
the monsters…
My head is filled to bursting
with demons
and I armed only
with my pitiful belief
stand forth
not bravely
to slay them…
There is only my mind
it creates all my reality
and surreality
and the monsters
and demons
are me
mine
my creation…

Am I the dreamer or the dreamed?

One of the worst things about mental illness is the belief from other people that because it is not manifested outwardly, physically or hideously, that it doesnt exist. For more years than I care to remember I have dwelled in the same soul with monsters who would devour me whole and yet I am here, creating from the pain and the love that fill my heart to bursting. I am blessed in that I know that the darkness, the monsters – they are all part of me, and somehow we all have to live together in this body I call mine.

Mandalas are the most powerful healing tool I have EVER used in my entire life. They integrate me step by step, stage by stage, monster by monster. They help me slay my demons, they help me understand and accept who I am.

In this time of deep darkness, I pray.

    My goodness, Marg, I don’t know whether to comment first on your exquisite writing or the stained-glass-like mandala, before me: so delicate, with light shining through, and jewels, and gold leaf paint. The mandala is breathtaking. One of your most beautiful; though so many are beautiful. It seems appropriate that these creatures are dragonflies; because the dragons are flying away. Although still contained in the inner circle, they face outward, away from the center.

    Your poem is touching. Mental illness is hard to understand, I would think even for those who study it, who seemed to have labeled just about everything, to the point that it begs the question, “what is normal”? And is anyone “normal”. It’s exciting and warming to know that these mandalas, and I suspect the process of creating them, have helped you so much to “stay the demons”.

    Aw… i know how that feels.. the monsters which we create ourselves.. and the only way to get out is to slay them one by one.. i love the words you use..’not bravely’.. i felt the same..not brave at all.. but something inside of me pushed me forward to meet yet another demon.. sometimes wondering if it would ever end.. let me tell you.. the monsters get less.. each time..you accept them to be part of who you are..
    it takes courage to share feelings like this.. but it also helps in the healing.
    I’ve done some mandala’s too.. they forced me to slow down and have patience..
    I love your mandala.. really is outstanding.. the deep blue combined with the other colours.. the design.. all has a lot of tenderness.. xx

It is a very long process – this slaying of our demons and I do know that they become less with time – but it is interesting that some of them come back in different guises when we least expect them too!
