Preening Pelicans

Over a hundred white pelicans have recently shown up on the upper Rainy River in my home town of Fort Frances, Ontario. In years past there have been a few but this year they are in large numbers and quite fearless as they fish in the rapids and preen on a big bald rock only 25 meters from shore.

In this image one can easily see the horn-billed males preening and getting fancy for the ladies as breeding season begins.
