He sat underneath the whistle tree
harmonica by his side
sweet ride
thought about her
and then
swore off women
for good; again
played blue rhythm tunes
for a friend.

I can hear her in that music.

She’s everywhere he says
under the branches
in my bed
she’s in the wind
quiet now; can you hear her here?
Inspiration in the dust
I know
I must
I must
I must
play this woman away.

And he played an aching muse.

He sat there for days
until his mouth was dry
he stayed
until he could do no more
dusty rhythm and haze
he emptied his heart and he played
all of her into his tunes.

He played that woman away.

He drew her into his lungs
and blew her out into the breeze
he manipulated the chambers
of his heart
the harmonica
his needs
and he told her that he loved her
underneath the whistle tree that day
he played her words she needed
but the wind took them away

he played that woman away.

You could feel him struggle and then get the hang of it after a while, he was just missing a crowd.
