Don't feed the birds

The rainbow birds landed
on my head
on my arms
perched in a line
reminding me of all the times
that I were wired
and all of the time I have wasted
on these streets; don’t count on it.

This has been the highlight of today.

I positioned myself
like jesus on a cross
their claws curling into my skin
and suddenly I felt so human

If there were enough of you
could you pick me up and carry me away?

Pretty little things
all dancing
and singing
and sinning
eating bread from my fingers
and fruit from my fever
this tingle never lingers
it remains safely tucked underneath their wings
until tomorrow
I’ll be here
I’ll be waiting
I’ll be sitting on the steps
counting you all
whilst you fool me into believing
that I am the lucky one
as I watch you fly away again.

i love this – and that sense of reaching into flesh – feeling human but wanting to leave … and fingers/fruit/fever – these are great. xjm
