I tore you from the centre
of a magazine
carefully avoiding ripping holes
in the underside of your elbows
staples opened
freeing you from between the gloss
opening you up
I am sure I heard you sigh
with relief
you are free
and in my hands.
I hold you in front of me
oggling at you with my big saucer eyes
you are beautiful, brave and statuesque
standing there like that
on paper
you are everything I wanted to be
when I was thirteen.
I Blu Tac you to the ceiling
above my bed
so that I can stare
there
you look down at me
through me
and I’m sure I heard you whisper
that I was beautiful too
that I looked just a little bit like you.
When I grow up
I want to be a Varga Girl.

What a cool, creative concept Nicole, and the words flow right off the pages of that magazine you described beautifully. Well done!

This put a lot of ideas and images into my head. I thought it was nice that you freed her from the magazine, and you looked up to her on the ceiling. In some ways though I felt that she wasn’t free. Was this my imagination, maybe just bringing my own personal baggage to your piece, sorry, although we are all guilty of doing this to a certain extent. I thought it was great writing. It made me feel, and that is what good writing does. Smiles from Jane:-)

This is sooo perfect!! Honestly I just felt it the whole way, every line I was hooked!!
“I am sure I heard you sigh
with relief
you are free
and in my hands.” Those lines are wonderful! So so wonderful!
“and I’m sure I heard you whisper
that I was beautiful too” Those ones also!! Oh I just loved it all!!!

I’m the guy (among many millions, I’m sure) who also tore the Vargas Girl from the magazine and taped it above my bed and dreamed of meeting you some day… still oogling…

I found a bunch of 60’s playboys a while back. There is a Varga girl in each of them, I love the innocent and sexiness of those images, really cool poem.

love this…to my mind, when you put her on the ceiling, you elevate her to angel status…...she’s still a pinup but maybe in a less sexual way than she was in the magazine…....?

absolutely :)
I appreciate your beautiful perspective.
