During a warm, humid afternoon, a female Rufous Hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus ) flits among numerous red blossoms at the UBC Botanical Garden. Given the heat, this bird spent much time perched on stems in the shade, trying to stay cool. Only occasionally did she take wing and seek sweet floral nourishment under a glaring sun.
