A Columbian ground squirrel (Urocitellus columbianus) lets out a formidable chirp as it communicates with others in the vicinity. The note is very similar to a bird, and could easily be mistaken for an avian at times when the ground squirrel is not visible. The meadow teemed with the singing rodents, with the air filled with an unceasing march of high-pitched calls.
