I was after crows, and instead found this owl.
A number of corvids were harassing the owl before I arrived. Initially, I did not know the reason for all the caws. Since I like photographing crows, I decided to try a few shots and closed in on the tree. The black passerines flew away as I neared and readied my camera. I guess my approach gave the owl some respite.
The Barred Owl (Stryx varia) peered down from a deep-crowned Western redcedar tree. This striking avian was not in a remote woodland, but smack in the middle of Vancouver, BC, at Queen Elizabeth Park. An urban predator.
