A Common Red Soldier Beetle (Rhagonycha fulva), clinging to a young cattail leaf, gazes across an airy gap toward a clump of flowers. The blossoms contain a small group of these fire-colored beetles actively finding mates, and apparently this one is eager to join the action. The beetle eventually flew off and joined the crowd. This species of soldier beetle is native to Europe, and has been introduced to British Columbia where it now has a common presence in some regions.
