A Four-spotted Skimmer (Libellula quadrimaculata_) rests on its favorite perch, an old cattail leaf. Another leaf in the background is curled in a familiar form. The cattail (_Typha latifolia), also known as bullrush and reedmace, is a common perch for dragonflies. Aside from dragon perches, the plant is commonly used by odonate nymphs climbing out of the water for the final molt into an adult form. The thick grassy leaves and tall stems are also home to many animal species outside of dragonflies.
