Nimble-Fingered Denizen of the Wood by

A Douglas squirrel (Tamiasciurus douglasii) munches on a seed, using very dextrous fingers to hold the morsel. These creatures are very curious, incredibly agile and can manipulate small items with their hand-like paws. Squirrels are perhaps the most monkey-like creature to be found in coastal British Columbia.

Great close-up shot! We have lots of squirrels around here. I have taken a few photos, but didn’t get this close of a shot. Nice work!

  • Thank you, Sharon. Some of the fox squirrels at Stanley Park will take food from your hands, and even climb a person. This Douglas squirrel is a bit more cautious.
