A young glaucous-winged gull (Larus glaucescens) rides a steady wave of air that envelopes the Tsawwassen-Swartz Bay Ferry while in motion. An entire flock of gulls accompanied the ship on its journey across the Strait of Georgia, using energy derived from fossil fuels—the power behind the boat and hence the atmospheric envelope—to catch an easy ride from one shore to the other.
