A mallard duck and the old stump of a western redcedar tree share reflections during a quiet sunny morning. The tree was harvested perhaps a century ago (very roughly speaking)—a springboard notch is visible near the water. Likely, many decades passed before the decaying roots released from the land. Now the old stump sits in the shallow waters of a wetland, and is sometimes the roost for birds. Reifel Bird Sanctuary, BC, 21 Sep 2009.
